Ankur Chatterjee: A crude bomb on Saturday burst on the roof of a school building in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district while classes were in session, according to a senior Bengal Police official.
As per him, no casualties happened in the incident since kids and teachers were in classrooms on the first and second floors of the three-story structure.
According to a managing committee member of the state-aided institute at Titagarh in the district’s industrial area, the kids freaked out and fled the premises helter-skelter, while staff climbed upstairs to find bomb splinters that were close to the roof.
After inspecting the scene, a top official from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate told media that the incident was caused by a single crude bomb.
He stated that it would be investigated whether the bomb was thrown from a nearby structure or was it kept stored there and then exploded.
Arjun Singh, MP for Barrackpore, informed reporters on the scene that whoever was guilty for the explosion would be prosecuted and punished.
“I fear to imagine what may have occurred if a child had been near the bomb’s vicinity. I’ve asked the commissioner of police and other high officials at the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate to look into the matter,” said Mr. Singh, who joined the TMC from the BJP in May.
Locket Chatterjee, the BJP’s Hooghly MP, has called for a CBI inquiry into the event. “Even school children are not safe under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Bombs have been discovered in West Bengal residences and party offices. Today’s incident highlights the dismal state of law and order. We have no faith in the state police or the CID. We want a CBI inquiry to uncover the facts” she said.
