Ankur Chatterjee: The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is likely to take place in Westminster Abbey on September 19, with large crowds likely to gather in central London. Her highness’ demise sets in action a meticulously coordinated strategy that has been fine-tuned and prepared down to the last detail over decades.

The queen’s coffin will then be transported to Windsor Castle for a televised committal service at St George’s Chapel.

Senior members of the royal family are expected to walk behind the coffin as it is transported to the abbey on a gun carriage during a period of two-minute silence.

The queen will thereafter be interred privately at the King George VI memorial chapel, with the ashes of her husband, Prince Philip, her sister Princess Margaret, their mother, also named Elizabeth, and their father, George VI.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was Britain’s longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday. She was 96 years old during the time of her death.

Buckingham Palace announced her death in a brief statement, triggering ten days of national mourning and an outpouring of tributes to her long life and a record-breaking reign.

Charles, Prince of Wales, the eldest of her four children and the oldest heir apparent in British history at 73, becomes king promptly. He will be known as King Charles III, the first monarch of his name to rule since 1685.

Charles described his mother’s death as “a time of enormous anguish for myself and other members of my family.”
