Ankur Chatterjee: On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of selling “nationalism” and undermining the poor’s self-esteem and said that retailers were forcing ration card holders to buy the national flag.
In a Facebook post, Mr Gandhi said in Hindi that the tricolour represents the nation’s pride and that it lives in every Indian’s heart.
“Nationalism is something that can’t be purchased. It is sad that the underprivileged, while receiving rations, are asked to pay rupees 20 for the tricolour” claimed Mr. Gandhi.
“Beside the tricolour, the BJP government is also targeting the self-respect of our country’s underprivileged,” the former Congress president stated, sharing a video apparently showing ration card holders protesting against the imperative of spending 20-rupees to buy the national flag.
Earlier in the day, BJP MP Varun Gandhi said that ration card holders were being forced to purchase the national flag in order to receive monthly ration.
He stated that it would be sad if the 75th anniversary of independence had to become a burden on the poor.
In a tweet, Varun Gandhi called it “shameful” to force the poor to pay for the ‘Tiranga’ and deny them food.
Varun Gandhi remarked in the same tweet that “Tiranga” lives in the hearts of every Indians.
As part of its ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, the central government has invited citizens to hoist or display the national flag from their homes from August 13 to 15.
The BJP has been taking all possible measures to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative becomes a huge success.
