Lightning kills 9 people in Madhya Pradesh : heavy rain forecasted

Ankur Chatterjee: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rains and thunderstorms on Sunday with lightning in scattered areas of the state. Nine people were killed and two others were injured in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha, Satna, and Guna districts in the previous 24 hours, according to officials.

Four people were killed in Vidisha on Saturday evening while standing under a tree for shelter during rain in Agasod village in Ganjbasoda tehsil, roughly 45 kilometres from the district capital, according to city police station inspector Kunwar Singh Mukati.

The inspector identified the deceased as Galu Malviya, Ramu, Gudda, and Prabhu Lal, all between the ages of 30 and 40.

After the postmortem, the corpses were returned to the families, the inspector said.

Four persons were killed and two minor boys were injured in separate lightning strikes in Satna’s Podi-Pataura and Jatwara regions on Saturday, according to authorities.

Anjana (34), Chandra (65), Rajkumar (65), and Ramkumar Yadav (43) were among those killed. The injured boys, aged 12 and 16, were taken to a hospital, according to authorities. Manu Ahirwar, 45, was killed in Guna on Saturday after being struck by lightning in Bhora village, according to police.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning are expected in scattered areas of MP on Sunday, according to the IMD. It also predicted strong to very heavy rain in isolated areas of MP for three days beginning Monday.

Showers have fallen in many areas across the state in the last 24 hours. According to the IMD, Gwalior had 54.6 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to IMD Bhopal office senior meteorologist Ved Prakash Singh, a low pressure region established over the north-west Bay of Bengal was delivering moisture to Madhya Pradesh, generating rain.
